GELIDONIA LIGHTHOUSE

The construction of one of the guiding lighhouses of the Mediterrenean, Gelidonya Lighthouse, started on the historic Licea route in Antalya, Kumluca, Taşlık Foreland in 1934 and was opened in 1936.

Gelidonya Lighthouse is the highest lighthouse in Turkey, with an altitude of 227 metres. Being located over steep rocks, it is quite difficult to reach there. Even today, it works manually due to the difficulty in transferring electricity.

As soon as you reach the Lighthouse, it is impossible not to be fascinated by the mysterious and virgin beauties of the combination of the sea and five Gelidonian islands. You will feel that there is no sense of time and experience emotions that are hard to define. Maybe it is an unnamed fantasy land. Gelidonya Lighhouse, washed by the Mediterrenean sunlight among the scent of pinetrees, it is the lighthouse with the most impressive scenery.

Some recommendations:

The path from the shore leftwards is quite steep.

After a few sharp turnings, you climb up on the path covered with pine trees. Here it is: Gelidonya Lighthouse.

Leave your bags to the pergola there and head to the Lighthouse.

If it is around 17.00-18.00 p.m., meet the guard of the Lighthouse, Mustafa. Mustafa, who has happily taken over this job from his ancestors, would give you a tour of the lighthouse with pleasure.

If you cannot find Mustafa, who recently got married and now has a child, you may jump over the wall in front of the door and open the door from inside.

This is the suggestion of Mustafa, whom we remember with his hospitality: Please do not hesitate! It is impossible to put into words the scenery you will see from the top of the Lighthouse. Dream as you watch the sunset and the motions of the wind over the sea.

The island on your lefthandside is called Island with water. Mustafa tells that there is a water spring on that island where the water is unbelievably tasty.

If you go forward from the front side of the Lighthouse, you will enter a forest of sage. If you are planning to spend the night there, you should note that this part is really windy since it is overlooking the open sea. Set the tent if you have one with you. Mustafa will offer you the room with Ottoman style couches in the Lighthouse. It is up to you to make your choice. No matter what you do, do not forget to go to the backside and enjoy the view of the blinking light, the stars and their reflections on the sea. You will be suprised to see that the light never goes off but revolves around itself, if you go up the Lighthouse. Though frightening the blowing wind is, it is also fascinating. There are some rumours that these sounds are the whispers of lost mariners. You may start to interpret the sounds as such, even though you know that this is not true.

We are here at Gelidonya Lighthouse till the moon appears and the stars disappear!!!

FAIRYTALES HAVE A NAME: GELİDONYA LIGHTHOUSE

No matter which season or what time of the day it is, as soon as you enter the Gelidonya Lighthouse, you make your first steps into a fairytale land. You will be speechless. Sulu Ada and Şeytan Adaları will seem to you as magical spots behind the blue. As you sit on the pergola, you will realise with the sunrise what a morning is like in the fairytales. If the sky begins to become red, this means that you will experience a fairytale evening. If the days go by like this, do not be surprised, it is a fairytale. There are no evil giants in it.

How is it possible for the sun to descend so sadly?

How can a night be so blue? How beautiful can the flirting of the trees with the wind under the sun or within the blue of the night be?

To see them all, climb to the top of the Lighhouse. Remember to take the permission of the guard, as it happens in every fairytale. The guard of the Lighthouse, its son and the prince of this fairytale, Mustafa, will see that you would like to experience this magic and grant the permission. Now open the iron gate that opens to the small yard. Then enter from the door on the right and go towards the stairs. You will see a signboard written in Japanese which had fallen from a ship and now used as a table. Hold your breath as you climb the stairs, you will feel the whistling of the wind, but you are misled. This is the sound the light illuminating the fairytale. The light of the Lighthouse turning on the wheels, makes this sound while firing the gas. It is as if you have some kind of fear. It would feel like the evil hero of the Treasure Island, Captain Flint will turn up with his hooked hand and wooden leg and sing his famous song: ‘’From every seven waves one big possible and three bottleful rums’’

But you are the hero of this fairytale, he cannot do you any harm. Pass him by and go out of the small door. Feel the gentle stroke of the wind on your face. Let the light of mariner nights pass you by and dive into the blue of the night. Enjoy this and have faith in this fairytale.

As the famous poet Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar wrote, “whoever does not believe in fairytales, does not believe in the reality either”

Dermir attık Gelidonya Feneri ne, ay kavuşana yıldızlar kaybolana kadar burdayız…
